Description:

This initiative aims to recruit top doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars to Canadian institutions, securing the current and future talent needed to drive innovation and growth in our strategic industries. This opportunity is restricted to candidates who are currently outside of Canada and not affiliated with a Canadian institution. The selected candidates will be nominated for a CIRTA award. Final admissions to the University of Waterloo are conditioned on success in the CIRTA competition. Results are expected by April 1st, 2026. Interested individuals should read the CIRTA program information in detail before applying. These will be highly competitive awards.

Essential Qualification:

  • Post-doc Candidates:A Ph.D. degree in engineering, urban planning, data science or an adjacent discipline. Solid track of high-quality research that includes publication in academic journals. Experience in disaster risk or climate resilience research/practice. Demonstrable experience working in multi-disciplinary projects and teams.
  • Ph.D. Candidates:A M.Sc. degree in engineering, urban planning, data science or an adjacent discipline. Experience in disaster risk or climate resilience research/practice. Demonstrable interest in working in multi-disciplinary projects and teams. Publications in academic journals are a valuable asset.

Postdoc candidates: 2 years. Ph.D. Candidates:  3 years

Benefits:

  • Postdoc candidates: CAD$70,000 per year for up to 2 years.
  • Ph.D. Candidates: CAD$40,000 for up to 3 years (plus other benefits, as detailed in the link above).
  • Successful applicants will also participate in national and international conferences and engage in peer-to-peer learning with colleagues from Canada and the US through the Supervisors’ current collaborations. You will receive mentorship to publish your work as a lead author in high-quality journals, thereby gaining recognition for your contributions
