PhD Position in energy systems
Description:
- The overall aim of the Doctoral student-project is to investigate energy transitions which are not only cost-efficient but also feasible from a technical and socio-technical perspective. You will work in an interdisciplinary team including electric power engineers and social scientists and develop methods to include aspects such as reliability, acceptance and fairness into a modeling framework, applied to the Nordic energy system. The work takes its starting point in a mathematical representation of technologies and costs in the energy system, therefore requiring an engineering background. However, for this project you must also be open to learn to include social science perspectives on the energy transition by means of cooperation with other research groups.
What you will do
- Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Energy, Environment and Systems
- Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
- The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours
- Present your results on seminars and workshops within the research project
Required Qualification:
Essential Qualification:
- To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Energy Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental science, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- *for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.
Preferred Qualification:
- Experience from techno-economic modelling, energy storage modelling, techno-economic assessment and environmental assessment.
- Experience from working in interdiciplinary teams.
- Familiarity with algebraic modeling languages used for linear programming (e.g. Julia/JuMP,
- Python/Pyomo, AMPL, MATLAB, GAMS).
Employment Conditions and Benefits:
Contract duration:
- The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
- The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
- A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
- Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.

About the Host Lab Group/Institution:
- At the Division of Energy Technology, we develop and analyse sustainable energy systems and conversion technologies for industry and society. Through strong national and international collaboration, we unite experimental and systems research to create efficient, low-emission solutions driving the transition towards carbon-neutral energy and industry. The energy systems group at Energy Technology has a long experience in the field of energy systems analysis and development of modeling methodologies. A focus of the research is to understand the challenges and opportunities with integrating renewable energy sources and electrification of new sectors at different geographical levels. The research group participates in several large research projects such as Mistra Electrification and North European Power Perspectives. The group has close collaboration and interaction with many industries, cities, municipalities, regions, etc.
- Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg conducts research and education in technology and natural sciences at a high international level. The university has 3100 employees and 10,000 students, and offers education in engineering, science, shipping and architecture.
