About the Host Lab Group/Institution:

The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), located in Jadavpur, Kolkata, is a premier autonomous research institute and the oldest scientific institution in Asia, established in 1876 by Dr. Mahendralal Sircar to promote fundamental research in basic sciences. Funded primarily by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, and the Government of West Bengal, it is a renowned center for advanced research in physical, chemical, biological, materials, and interdisciplinary sciences. Historically significant, IACS is where Sir C.V. Raman discovered the 'Raman Effect' in 1928, the only Nobel Prize-winning work in science from India. The institute currently functions as a deemed university for higher education, offering doctoral and postdoctoral programs, and is ranked highly in the Nature Index for chemical and physical sciences. With over 60 faculty members and a strong cohort of research scholars, IACS focus areas include nano-materials, chemical biology, non-conventional energy sources, and theoretical sciences, aiming to tackle both fundamental scientific questions and technological advancements for societal benefits. The campus is in the process of developing a modern Smart Campus at Baruipur while maintaining its legacy of excellence in its Jadavpur premises
