About the Host Lab Group/Institution:
The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), located in Kolkata, is the oldest research institute in India, founded on July 29, 1876, by Dr. Mahendralal Sircar to foster scientific research in the country. It is a premier deemed university funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and is recognized globally for excellence in basic and interdisciplinary sciences. Historically, IACS is renowned as the place where Sir C.V. Raman discovered the 'Raman Effect' in 1928, for which he was awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics, making it the only Nobel-winning work in science done in India. Today, the institute maintains high standards of research in diverse areas, including Materials Science, Nanoscience, Theoretical and Computational Physics, and Chemical Biology. Located in Jadavpur, South Kolkata, IACS operates as an autonomous institution, housing over 60 faculty members and hundreds of doctoral/post-doctoral researchers. In 2018, it was designated as a Deemed University (de novo Category) and now offers an integrated BS-MS program, focusing on nurturing young talent in science. It is consistently ranked among the top research institutions in India, often leading in chemistry research within the Nature Index.
